- They are charming
Yes, they really are. Think about all the languages that exist, how they are linked, the different writing methods, some completely different from ours. Don’t they fascinate you too? The different sounds, the dialects of the same language, the identical letters but pronounced differently based on the country. When I think about it I get lost in my thoughts and I find myself wishing to know them all, to be able to make comparisons between them from an inside point of view. I think about how it could be to feel that particular language from the inside, feeling it like your mother tongue but with the possibilities to compare it with all the other ones you know. I know, I have very strange thoughts even though I hope I’m not the only one. Then I wake up from my thoughts and discourage me because I think it will never happen but doesn’t last long because that thought, that desire, pushes me to continue studying my languages. Even when it seems difficult that dream is there.
- They help you to know more about the different cultures and interact with more people
If you know the language of a place you can learn more about the culture, in fact they are closely related. There are expressions that you can understand only if you connect them to a particular context. In addition speaking the language allows you to deep better in the culture and understand it better. I know it can sound repetitive but for me they are indissoluble. They should be studied together in order to get the best of both. Also if you know the local language you can discover aspects that you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. Moreover you can interact with more people if you speak different languages. You can talk, discuss and share new things with people completely different from you. If you speak their language they will have a more positive attitude towards you because they will see an effort in trying to learn compared to other people that speak only their mother tongue. You will learn a lot more not only about the language but also about their lifestyle. To do this, even a few words and phrases are enough, they’ll see the effort, it isn’t mandatory to speak a language perfectly before traveling. Traveling itself will help you to improve the language if you pay attention and are open to learn.
- It can be funny and relaxing
Yes, we always talk about the difficulties and the effort required to learn a language, but I think we should also talk about the positive parts. One of these is the fun part. I know you’ll probably be thinking how this effort can be fun? but you must consider not only the classic way of studying with books. There are a multitude of ways nowadays and some are funny and relaxing. Just think about watching your favorite movies and TV series in their original language, or listen to some music and focus on the meaning of the text or just sing along with it improving your pronunciation. You can also find a friend to learn and improve together. These are just some of the things that can be done including languages and having fun. Even books, however, can lead to pleasant things, for example, after I finish a chapter or the pages that I programmed I feel good, I feel that I have done something good. Then I practice what I learned talking to myself and laughing at my different way of talking, I’m not crazy, I’m just passionate about them. This is to say that you shouldn’t stop yourself from doing it because you think that it will be always boring, there are in fact a myriad of ways to make it fun.
- A translated book conveys different emotions than the original one
This is a very important point for me, reading. I love reading and when I started studying languages I also started to buy books in the languages I was learning. Although at the beginning it was difficult to understand them , improving I was able to read more and more. What I have noticed and understood, and that also applies to anything else that is translated or dubbed as the films, is that the emotions that gives you the original version will never give you the translation. It will never be able to transmit the exact same things. This happens because there are so many factors and things that affect the process of writing a book that it’s impossible to translate each one of those aspects. Above all because often the structures of a language haven’t a direct correspondence in the other so you have to adjust them and find others structures losing some nuances in the process. I imagine that after all this you’ll understand how important reading books in the original language is for me so I suggest you to try it. Take a book that inspires you or a book you already know but in the original language and then let me know what you think of this method. In case you don’t like it, you’ll have improved your reading so it will have been positive in some ways.
These are the main reasons that push me to keep going when I’m stuck. I hope they can help you too. Everyone has these small moments, but the important thing is don’t desist and continue to do what we like, even if it is difficult. Even a small step is important, because it brings us closer to our goals so we don’t have to give up when it becomes difficult but we have to remind ourselves why we started and keep going with more strength and enthusiasm. Do you also have reasons that encourage you to study languages?
